FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1) Why do these shirts cost more?

Most garment manufacturers pay their employees less than $2 per day. Laborers work 12 hour days and yet do not earn enough to escape from poverty. We believe that workers should earn fair wages. Additionally, we invest in community development programs in sub-Saharan Africa, working with organizations that seek to provide healthcare, education, and other essential resources. And in Minneapolis, we invest in tutoring and other programs to support and build the lives of the young people who work with us.

2) What difference does Fair Trade make?

Fair Trade can literally mean the difference between life and death. For example, a cotton farmer in Uganda would make 42 cents per pound of cotton on the open market. Cotton costs about 38 cents per pound to produce in most parts of sub-saharan africa. A farmer who is a member of a fair trade co-op might earn 51 cents per pound. While this doesn’t sound like a lot, it may mean the difference between being able to feed his family or not. Additionally, fair trade ensures that products are produced in an environment that is healthy for the workers.

3) How do we know these shirts are made in fair conditions in Africa?

We will post pictures and stories periodically, profiling workers who make our shirts. We are also working on a video piece that shows the whole production process.

4) Where can I buy these shirts?

Currently, the best place to purchase Forgotten Shirts is online. We are working with various small retailers in the Minneapolis area, and will have products available soon.
